Launched in 2021 and composed by the renowned perfumer Cécile Zarokian, Material is described by the house as a “paradox” that explores the duality between materiality and immateriality. It is a deep, resinous Amber Vanilla fragrance that moves away from the typical “cupcake” or gourmand sweetness often associated with vanilla. Instead, it showcases a “vanilla untamed,” utilizing a high-quality Madagascar Vanilla Absolute that reveals its leathery, animalic, and woody facets. The scent underwent a meticulous 14-week aging process (11 weeks maceration and 3 weeks maturation) to reach its full complexity. It opens with a sharp, balsamic brightness from elemi and earthy patchouli, which quickly melts into a dense heart of warming benzoin. The dry down is a smoky, rich tapestry of guaiac wood, frankincense, and oud, softened by the apricot-like sweetness of osmanthus and a powdery tonka bean base.
